AFG vs NZ: Afghanistan upsets New Zealand in T20 World Cup 2024

T20 World Cup 2024: How Afghanistan lost the semifinal round and still managed to win hearts of Cricket Fans all over the World?

Afghanistan pulled off a dominant 84-run victory against New Zealand in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The match (AFG vs NZ), played on June 7th at Providence Stadium, Guyana, saw Afghanistan bat first and put up a strong total of 159 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. New Zealand, chasing a target of 160 runs, were bundled out for just 75 runs in 15.2 overs.

Afghanistan’s batting success was largely due to a brilliant opening partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Gurbaz, who was later awarded the Player of the Match title, smashed a quickfire 80 runs off just 56 balls. His knock included 9 fours and 5 sixes, keeping the New Zealand bowlers in a quest for wicket. Zadran also played a crucial knock, scoring 44 runs off 41 deliveries.

After the dismissal of the openers, wickets fell at regular intervals, but Afghanistan managed to maintain a good run rate thanks to contributions from Mohammad Nabi (13 runs) and Rashid Khan (20 runs). The team’s total of 159 runs proved to be more than enough on a pitch that seemed to assist the spinners.

New Zealand’s chase got off to a disastrous start as they lost opener Finn Allen for a golden duck in the very first over. The experienced batting line-up, featuring players like Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, and Daryl Mitchell, failed to live up to expectations. The New Zealand batsmen struggled against the Afghan spinners, with Rashid Khan being the pick of the bowlers. Khan scalped 4 wickets for just 17 runs in his 4 overs, completely bamboozling the Kiwi batsmen.

Fazalhaq Farooqi, another Afghan fast bowler, also impressed with his bowling, taking 4 wickets for 22 runs in his spell. New Zealand’s batting order collapsed entirely, with only Matt Henry (12 runs) and Glenn Phillips (18 runs) managing to reach double digits.

This victory is a huge boost for Afghanistan’s confidence as they look to challenge for a place in the knockout stages of the tournament. They had already defeated Uganda in their opening warm-up match, showcasing their good form. For New Zealand, this loss comes as a major setback. They are considered one of the favorites to win the World Cup, and this defeat puts pressure on them to win their remaining matches in the group stage.
