Wimbledon: Jannik Sinner wins marathon match, Daniil Medvedev fights back, Carlos Alcaraz extends streak

Jannik Sinner, Wimbledon

The second round of Wimbledon served up some thrilling matches, with Italian rising star Jannik Sinner emerging victorious in a nail-biting encounter against his compatriot. Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz also won their respective matches.

Young gun Jannik Sinner secured a hard-fought victory over fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini, booking his place in the third round. The match, which lasted nearly four hours, was a testament to the high level of competition at Wimbledon this year. Both players displayed incredible baseline power, with neither giving an inch in their pursuit of victory.

Sinner, the Australian Open champion, ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 7-6(3), 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(4). Crucially, Sinner managed to capitalize on Berrettini’s backhand errors at key moments throughout the match.

“First of all we are very good friends,” Sinner acknowledged after the win. “We played Davis Cup together and we practise together, so it is very very tough we had to face in the second round in such an important tournament. Today was a very high-level match. In three tie-breaks I got a little bit lucky and I take it for today.”

Sinner will now face Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round, who himself came back from a set down to defeat Tallon Griekspoor.

World number two Daniil Medvedev found himself down a set and a break against Alexandre Muller in their second-round clash. However, the Russian champion displayed his trademark resilience, battling back to win the match 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-5.

This victory required Medvedev to dig deep and save two crucial set points in the second set. “It was a very tough, physical match,” Medvedev commented. “Alex played well and some moments in the match were very tough to stay in touch with him… Definitely happy with the win. I should have played much better, but it is okay. When you win, there is a next round to try to do better.”

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant run at Wimbledon, defeating Australian Alexander Vukic in straight sets (7-6(5), 6-2, 6-2). Despite a brief hiccup in the first set, where he fell behind 5-6, Alcaraz recovered superbly to force a tie-break, which he won convincingly. He then maintained his high level throughout the remaining sets.

“I am really happy about my performance,” Alcaraz said after the match. “I think the first set was the key. He served for the set and I broke and after I played a really good tie-break. I played a really high level in the second and third sets, so I am really happy about it.”

With these exciting second-round matches setting the stage, Wimbledon promises to be a thrilling tournament to watch as it progresses.
