The West Indies, co-hosts of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, kicked off their preparations in style with a convincing 28-run victory over South Africa at Sabina Park. This win in the West Indies vs South Africa T20 match marked their biggest margin of victory over South Africa when batting first.
While neither team fielded their strongest lineup due to players being rested or participating in the IPL, the West Indies displayed clear dominance on their home turf. Leading the charge for the Windies was Brandon King, who captained the side in the absence of Rovman Powell. Playing on his home ground, King smashed a blistering 79 runs off just 45 balls, setting the tone for a strong batting performance. He built a crucial 79-run partnership with Kyle Mayers (not part of the T20 World Cup squad) to provide a solid foundation.

The Windies continued to capitalize on King’s early dominance, reaching a healthy 64 for 1 after the Powerplay and 109 for 1 at the halfway mark. However, their batting faltered somewhat in the later overs, losing 6 wickets for just 40 runs between the 14th and the final over. Despite the late collapse, they managed to post a competitive total of 175 runs on the board.
South Africa can take some positives away from their bowling performance, particularly their comeback in the later stages of the Windies innings. Ottneil Baartman, making his T20I debut, impressed with 3 wickets for 26 runs, despite experiencing a scare with a potential left knee niggle early on. All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo also chipped in with 3 wickets in his 4 overs.
South Africa’s much-anticipated top order had a disappointing start, collapsing to 35 for 3 by the fifth over. Neither Quinton de Kock nor Ryan Rickelton could manage double figures, and the Proteas’ boundary-finding was significantly less frequent compared to the Windies. While the Windies hit 15 fours and sixes in the first 10 overs, South Africa could only manage 8 fours and a single six.
Reeza Hendricks was a lone bright spark in the South African batting lineup. He played a career-best knock of 87 runs off just 51 balls, but unfortunately, his heroics came a little too late in the chase. South Africa needed a mammoth 99 runs off the last 10 overs, and despite Hendricks’ valiant effort, they were unable to bridge the gap. West Indies’ bowlers, Gudakesh Motie (3 for 25) and Obed McCoy (2 for 15), kept things tight, restricting South Africa to 147 runs, 28 runs short of the target.
This West Indies vs South Africa match was a valuable warm-up for both teams before the T20 World Cup. The West Indies will be pleased with their overall performance, especially Brandon King’s captaincy debut and their strong bowling attack. South Africa, on the other hand, will need to address their top-order batting woes and find ways to build partnerships if they want to succeed in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
