West Indies Batsman Marlon Samuels retires from Professional Cricket

Former West Indies great Marlon Samuels has retired from professional cricket. Cricket West Indies Johnny Grave confirmed to ESPN Cricinfo that Samuels had told the board of his retirement in June, having last played a professional match in December 2018. He played 71 Tests, 207 ODIs and 67 T20 for West Indies and scored more than 11,000 International runs and took 150 wickets.

Samuels has been a big match player where he played an important role for West Indies winning two World Cups. In 2012 he scored 78 runs from 56 balls against Sri Lanka in the finals. He played another superb knock of 85 not out which helped Windies register a four-wicket victory against England at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

He represented different T20 league franchise all over the world which includes Pune Warriors, Delhi Daredevils, Melbourne Renegades and Peshawar Zalmi. Samuels have also landed in controversy at several occasion while playing which starts from 2002 where he defied a team curfew in India and was almost sent home. He was also banned in 2008 by ICC for two years for receiving money or benefit or other reward that could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute.

Andre Russell, a fellow Jamaican, called Samuels a “different Jamaican”, but summed up his former teammate appropriately: “He is a confident fellow”. In 2013 he was named as Wisden Cricketer of the year. In 2016 he was named as ODI cricketer of the year by West Indies Cricket Board. Samuels have been the key player for the Caribbean side as whenever they faced pressure and required certain amount of runs to chase entire team looked upto Samuels to get this done for them and he did superbly on more than one occasion for West Indies.
