Unity’s President Steps Down Amid Pricing Controversy in the Developer Community

Unity

Just less than a month after Unity made a big change in how they charge fees, which caused a lot of problems in the video game industry, the president and CEO of the company, John Riccitiello, is stepping down from his job right away.

Riccitiello used to be in charge of another big game company called Electronic Arts before he joined Unity in 2014. He didn’t talk much about the controversy in Unity’s announcement about him leaving. He just said it was an honor to lead Unity for nearly ten years, and he’ll still help the company during this change.

Unity didn’t mention the big problem in the game industry in their statement either. Instead, a director on Unity’s board, Roelof Botha, thanked Riccitiello for his leadership.

In reality, Riccitiello is retiring from his jobs as president and CEO and leaving the company’s board of directors. This might be to make Unity look better and avoid more criticism from game makers. He’ll stay around for a bit to help with the change and then leave completely.

Before this, Riccitiello got in trouble for saying that game developers who don’t use certain money-making options are not very smart. He also sold some of his shares in the company just before this big decision was made.

For now, James Whitehurst, who used to be the president of IBM, will take over as the leader of Unity for a while. He thinks Unity is in a good position to keep improving its software, help its community of customers and developers, and make more money.

Unity has said sorry for the controversy in other statements, and one of its leaders explained the fee change in more detail. But many people still don’t trust Unity, and the company has a lot of work to do to make things right with game developers.
