Treesa and Gayatri’s Singapore Open journey ends in semifinal heartbreak

Singapore Open, Treesa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand, Badminton

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand’s incredible run at the Singapore Open came to a disappointing end on Saturday. The Indian doubles pair, unseeded in the tournament, fell short in the semifinals against the formidable Japanese duo of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida.

A Dream Run Cut Short

This loss marked the end of India’s campaign in the BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament. The Indian duo, ranked 30th in the world, had been aiming for a remarkable feat: a hat-trick of victories against top-10 ranked opponents. However, the experience and skill of the World No. 4 Japanese pair proved too much to overcome.

A Close First Game with Missed Opportunities

The first game was a nail-biter, showcasing the fighting spirit of the Indian duo. Despite trailing early at 5-10, Treesa and Gayatri displayed exceptional grit, clawing their way back to level the score at 16-16. The Indians even managed to save two game points at 20-18, pushing the game to a tense 21-21 tie. Unfortunately, they couldn’t capitalize on this momentum, allowing the Japanese pair to secure the first game at 23-21.

Second Game Dominated by Japan

The second game unfolded differently. The Japanese duo, Matsuyama and Shida, seized control early on, establishing a commanding 20-6 lead. While Treesa and Gayatri attempted a comeback, the gap was simply too wide. The Japanese pair capitalized on their advantage, sealing the match victory at 21-11, securing their place in the finals.

Avenge for Japan, Disappointment for India

This victory for Japan held additional significance. It served as revenge for their semifinal defeat to Treesa and Gayatri at the Asia Team Championship back in February. This win solidifies Japan’s dominance in the head-to-head record, leading the series 3-1 against the Indian duo.

Earlier Upsets for the Indian Pair

Despite the semifinal loss, Treesa and Gayatri’s performance at the Singapore Open deserves major praise. They had already caused significant upsets in the earlier rounds, defeating the higher-ranked pairs of Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee (World No. 2) in the pre-quarters and Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Young (World No. 6) in the quarterfinals.

While their journey at the Singapore Open has ended, Treesa and Gayatri’s impressive performance has undoubtedly boosted their confidence and serves as a testament to their growing talent in the badminton world. The future holds promise for this Indian duo as they continue to compete and climb the rankings.
