T20 World Cup 2024 to introduce these features for the first time

T20 World Cup 2024, T20 World Cup

The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 is set to be a landmark event for accessibility in Indian sports broadcasting. Disney+ Hotstar, the official streaming platform for the tournament, has announced a groundbreaking initiative – offering live coverage with Hindi audio description and Indian Sign Language (ISL) interpretation. This move signifies a significant step towards inclusivity, allowing visually impaired and hearing impaired viewers to experience the thrill of the World Cup alongside everyone else.

This initiative marks a first for Indian sports streaming services. Previously, platforms like Disney+ Hotstar experimented with Hindi audio description for select IPL matches in 2022, but the inclusion of ISL interpretation is a completely new development. JioCinema, the current rights holder for the IPL, currently lacks features like closed captioning, ISL interpretation, or descriptive audio tracks in any language.

The introduction of these features aims to “democratize the game,” as stated by Sajith Sivanandan, head of Disney+ Hotstar. By providing ISL interpretation and audio description, Hotstar is removing the barriers that previously prevented visually impaired and hearing impaired viewers from fully enjoying live cricket broadcasts. This initiative ensures that the excitement and drama of the T20 World Cup 2024 is accessible to a wider audience, fostering a more inclusive sporting experience.

While the accessibility features represent a significant step forward, it’s important to note that they will be available for a select set of matches. Hotstar has confirmed that ISL interpretation and audio description will be available for 10 key matches, including all India matches, the semi-finals, and the finals. This ensures that viewers can experience the most high-stakes and exciting moments of the tournament with the aid of these accessibility features.

The commitment to accessibility extends beyond the T20 World Cup. Star Sports, which holds the TV broadcast rights for the IPL, has also announced plans to offer similar features in the coming months. Disney+ Hotstar has further pledged to incorporate closed captioning and audio description tracks for all of its original programming. However, the accessibility landscape for licensed content remains inconsistent across streaming platforms in India. A recent review by The Hindu highlighted that most platforms struggle with providing even basic accessibility features like closed captions for content acquired from other studios.

The Indian government’s IT Rules, 2021, encourage streaming platforms to prioritize accessibility for users with disabilities. Despite this recommendation, most progress has come through industry-driven initiatives rather than government enforcement. This begs the question – is more regulation needed to ensure consistent accessibility across all streaming platforms in India?

While challenges remain, the T20 World Cup’s embrace of accessibility features is a positive step forward. This initiative sets a strong precedent for the future of sports broadcasting in India, promoting inclusivity and ensuring that the thrill of cricket can be enjoyed by everyone. With continued industry efforts and potential government regulations, the future of sports streaming in India promises to be not just entertaining, but also accessible to all.
