Sussex county get 12-point deduction with Captain Cheteshwar Pujara handed 1-match ban

Sussex County Cricket Club has been issued a 12-point penalty in the ongoing County Championship. Additionally, their captain, Cheteshwar Pujara, has been handed a one-match suspension as per the regulations outlined by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for Professional Conduct.

These penalties stem from Sussex incurring four fixed penalties within a single season. Notably, Pujara, who was the captain during the specified matches, has accepted the suspension without contest.

“By virtue of receiving two additional fixed penalties in the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Leicestershire on 13 September 2023, Sussex CCC has now met the threshold of four fixed penalties in one season, having previously received two fixed penalties in the LV County Championship earlier in the season.” – an official said.

The on-field incidents leading to these suspensions involved players such as Tom Haines, Jack Carson, and Ari Karvelas, all of whom will not be part of the upcoming game against Derbyshire. Furthermore, Ari Karvelas will remain unavailable until an investigation into an incident that occurred during the Leicestershire game has been completed.

As a consequence of the five-point penalty, Sussex has dropped from the third to the fifth position in the County Championship standings and currently holds a total of 124 points.
