Shivam Dube will replace Nitish Reddy in T20I squad for Zimbabwe tour

Shivam Dube

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a change in their T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. The left-handed batter Shivam Dube will replace the injured Nitish Reddy, who was a surprise call-up after a successful IPL season.

India will play a 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, with all matches scheduled to be held in the capital city, Harare. The series kicks off on July 6th.

The BCCI selection committee named Shivam Dube as the replacement for Nitish Reddy, who is struggling with an injury. The BCCI did not disclose the specifics of the injury but confirmed that their medical team is monitoring Reddy’s progress.

This tour of Zimbabwe presents an opportunity for young Indian players to showcase their talent. Earlier this week, the BCCI had included youngsters Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma, and Nitish Reddy in the squad, rewarding them for their impressive performances in the recently concluded IPL season. This was Reddy’s first call-up to the national team.

With a busy international schedule ahead, the selectors have decided to rest senior players who are currently competing in the T20 World Cup 2024. This includes big names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah.

The unfortunate injury to Nitish Reddy is a setback for the young player who had a standout IPL season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Reddy was even awarded the Emerging Player title for his performances. The 21-year-old right-handed batsman scored a total of 303 runs at an impressive average of 33.67 and a blistering strike rate of 142.92.

One of Reddy’s most impactful performances came against Rajasthan Royals. He smashed a quickfire 42-ball 76, which included 8 sixes and 3 fours. This knock proved to be a match-winner for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

While primarily known for his batting, Reddy also showcased his bowling skills during the IPL. The medium pacer picked up 3 wickets in the tournament, including a crucial 2-wicket haul for just 17 runs against Delhi Capitals.

Shivam Dube, who replaces Reddy, is a well-established all-rounder in domestic cricket. He has already represented India in limited-overs formats and will be looking to make a strong impression on the selectors during the Zimbabwe series.

With the senior players rested, this tour provides a valuable platform for young Indian talents to gain international experience. The five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe will be a crucial opportunity for them to prove their mettle and stake their claim for a place in the Indian team for upcoming challenges.
