IPL 2025: RR Captain Riyan Parag Charged with Heavy Fine by BCCI after RR-CSK Match
Rajasthan Royals opened their points account in the IPL 2025 edition, with a victory in their match against the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings.
Despite losing their first two games, the team led by interim captain Riyan Parag managed to secure a 6-run victory, marking his first win as captain in the IPL 202. However, what has come as shocking piece of information is that Parag has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate while defending the target against CSK.
He became the second captain to be fined for slow over-rate after Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya was also fined in their last match against Gujarat Titans.
Stand-in skipper Riyan Parag though heaved a sigh of relief after Rajasthan Royals successfully beat Chennai Super Kings in their final home game in Guwahati after surviving a thriller.
However, a breach of an IPL rule during the match saw Parag getting slapped with a hefty fine, something quite unexpected from a player like him.
The BCCI imposed a fine since it was the team’s first offence in the ongoing season, under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences. Hardik had earlier served a one-match ban after MI breached the IPL Code of Conduct twice in the 2024 season and hence missed the season opener for Mumbai in the IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings.
However, as per the released guidelines before the seasoned had commenced, BCCI had confirmed that captains will no longer be banned if their team maintains a slow over-rate and will instead be penalized with demerit points based on the severity of the offence.
As far as the match report is concerned, the RR team gave an all-round performance as both bowling and batting departments performed commendably and took the two points for themselves.
Wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga finished with an impressive with 4 for 35, while Sandeep Sharma defended 20 runs in the final over, including the dismissal of MS Dhoni. Nitish Rana with his composed batting, scored a much-needed half-century to help the Royals reach a par score, which its bowlers were able to defend successfully.
As far as Riyan Parag is concerned, the young player should definitely walk the talk now – he must try to deliver with his performance rather than mere words, as he has been backed by the franchise, but he has failed to produce match winning innings for them.
Rajasthan Royals will next face Punjab Kings in Chandigarh, while the Chennai Super Kings will take on the Delhi Capitals on April 5.
