The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is the 18th edition of the world’s biggest league in cricket. It features a diverse array of captains for the ten franchises, with each skipper bringing unique leadership qualities and experiences to their respective teams.
This article throws light on each of the appointed captains and their record so far, as the anchor of their teams.
1. Hardik Pandya – The captain of the most successful franchise, his captaincy so far has seen both highs and lows. Leading his former team, the Gujarat Titans, he enjoyed a remarkable start, winning the title in his debut season and finishing as runners-up the following year.
Touted as a dynamic all-rounder in the IPL, he has showcased the incredible skill through his batting, bowling and fielding. Across his tenure as captain for both GT and MI, Pandya has led in 45 matches, securing 26 wins and facing 19 losses, with a reasonably well win percentage of 57.77.
2. Shreyas Iyer – Probably the man of the moment, Iyer has showcased strong leadership skills while captaining both Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. During his tenure with DC, he led the team in 41 matches, securing 21 victories and facing 18 defeats, with a win percentage of 51.21%.
As KKR’s captain, Iyer has been more effective, winning 17 out of 29 matches and losing 11, achieving a higher win percentage of 58.62%. He was the captain when they clinched the title in 2024.

3. Rishabh Pant – The most expensive player of the mega-auction last year, Rishabh Pant is a powerhouse of talent with both the bat and gloves. As a captain, Pant has led his team Delhi Capitals in 43 matches, securing 23 wins, 19 losses and 1 tie, with a win-loss ratio of 1.21.
This year he has joined hands to lead the LSG squad as their first time captain, and his tactical skills will be of immense help for the team.
4. Sanju Samson – Samson has led Rajasthan Royals as captain since 2021, guiding the team through 61 matches. Under his leadership, RR has secured 31 victories while facing 29 defeats, with one match ending without a result. His win percentage stands at 51.67%, reflecting a balanced captaincy record.
A crucial player for the men in pink, Samson’s commendable performance both as a batsman and wicketkeeper speaks volumes.
5. Ruturaj Gaikwad – The man from Maharashtra has led five team champions Chennai Super Kings in 14 IPL matches, delivering a balanced performance as captain. Under his leadership, CSK secured 7 wins and faced 7 losses, maintaining a win percentage of 50. He has been CSK’s most consistent opener, making him a significant asset in the league.
6. Shubman Gill – Fresh from the ICC Champions Trophy win, Gill is riding high on confidence currently. He has led the Gujarat Titans as captain with a mixed run so far. In 14 matches as a skipper, he secured 5 wins, 7 losses, and 2 no-result games. Shubman has been a standout performer in the IPL, delivering consistent performances with the bat.
7. Ajinkya Rahane – With sufficient experience, having led the Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants between 2017 – 2019, captaincy is not an unfamiliar territory for Rahane. In 25 matches as captain, he secured 9 wins and faced 16 losses, resulting in a win percentage of just 36%.
Now as the newly appointed and ninth captain of Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2025, Rahane will look to bring stability and experience to the squad.
8. Pat Cummins – The only overseas captain in this edition, the Australian pacer has displayed strong leadership skills in the IPL, captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 14 matches. Under his captaincy, the franchise secured 8 wins and faced 6 losses, resulting in a solid win percentage of 57.14%.
He has been a valuable player in the IPL and brings immense experience to lead a fiery team.
9. Axar Patel – Bapu, as he is fondly addressed, is a class player who has contributed as an all-rounder. For IPL 2025, Axar Patel has been appointed as the captain of the Delhi Capitals for the first time.
As a leader, he will aim to guide his team with his all-round abilities and experience in the tournament. So far, he has not led the team in any of the seasons earlier.
10. Rajat Patidar – The new and eight captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for IPL 2025, Patidar has taken the baton from Faf du Plessis. Brimming with high expectations and excitement, he is yet to lead the side. As a first-time captain, it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table.
My Perspective:
With each captain aiming to put their best foot forward and leading their respective franchise to a titular glory, the latest season only promises to be bigger, better and boisterous. The two month long cricketing mania is bound to display action packed performances and thrilling moments.
