Delhi Capitals name Anrich Nortje as replacement after Chris Woakes pulls out

Delhi Capitals on Tuesday named the South African right-arm fast bowler Anrich Nortje as the replacement of England’s all-rounder Chris Woakes for the upcoming season of the IPL 2020 in UAE.

Nortje will be filling in the shoes of Woakes who has committed to play for England in the summers and hence, he will not be joining his IPL side this season. Nortje will now be joining the Delhi based franchise in the UAE and he will also make his IPL debut this season.

The 26-year-old pacer was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2019 season of the IPL but he sustained a shoulder injury, that barred him from playing in the season and also missed his much-awaited IPL debut.

“I am excited to join the Delhi Capitals, a team that was the talk of the tournament last season. With its exciting mix of experienced and young players, and a stellar coaching line up, there is no doubt this is going to be a massive learning experience for me,” the right-arm seamer told the media.

“I am grateful to the Delhi Capitals management for giving me this opportunity,” Nortje added.

Nortje will be joining the Delhi Capitals squad in the UAE alongside his teammate Kagiso Rabada before the season starts on September 19.

In the IPL 2020 auction, Woakes was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for his base price of Rs. 1.5 crores. But later, he announced that he will not be playing in the upcoming edition of the IPL due to his commitment for the England team.
