IND vs ENG 5th Test: India Crushes England by an Innings and 64 Runs
The fifth and final Test match between India and England, played in Dharamsala from March 7th to 9th, 2024, was a one-sided affair dominated by the hosts. India secured a resounding victory by an innings and 64 runs, sealing the series win 4-1.
India’s batting juggernaut proved too powerful for England to handle. Captain Rohit Sharma (103) and star batter Shubman Gill (110) laid a solid foundation with a century partnership. Contributions from Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) and Devdutt Padikkal (65) further strengthened the score. The lower-middle order chipped in with crucial runs as well. Sarfaraz Khan (56) and Ravindra Jadeja (15) steadied the ship after a middle-order wobble. The tailenders, including Kuldeep Yadav (30) and Jasprit Bumrah (20), provided a late flourish, propelling India to a mammoth 477 runs in their first inning.

While James Anderson, the veteran English pacer, achieved a personal milestone by taking his 700th Test wicket – dismissing Kuldeep Yadav- it was a forgettable outing for the England bowling attack. Shoaib Bashir (5/173) was the pick of the bowlers, but his efforts were overshadowed by India’s batting power.
England, needing a near-impossible chase, suffered a batting collapse in their first innings. Zak Crawley (79) was the lone bright spark, as the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin (4/51) and Kuldeep Yadav (5/72) ran riot. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly but couldn’t get a wicket. Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 1 wicket, bundling England out for a paltry 218 runs.
England’s batting woes continued in their second inning. Joe Root (84) was the only batsman to show some resistance against a potent Indian bowling attack. However, the day belonged to Ravichandran Ashwin, who was celebrating his 100th Test match.

Ashwin displayed a remarkable all-around performance, taking a five-wicket haul (5/77) and effectively shutting the door on England’s hopes. Jasprit Bumrah (2/38) and Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) provided excellent support, bowling with pace and accuracy. England were eventually bowled out for 195 runs, handing India a resounding victory.
This win not only secured the series for India but also highlighted the emergence of young talents like Sarfaraz Khan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Dhruv Jurel. England, on the other hand, will need to go back to the drawing board and address their batting fault, especially against spin bowling. The performances of Ashwin, who achieved a landmark 100th Test and a crucial 5-wicket haul in the second inning, and the young Indian batting talents are the key highlights of this dominating display by the hosts.
