Heena Sidhu Biography: Heena Sidhu is an Indian Shooter who became the first-ever Indian pistol shooter to be ranked No. 1 in the International Shooting Sports Federation world rankings. In 2013, Sidhu became the first Indian pistol shooter to win a gold medal in an ISSF World Cup finals when she won the 10 metre air pistol event.

Heena was born on 29th August 1989, in the city of Ludhiana,Punjab. Her family includes her mother, father and her brother. Heena grew up in an environment surrounded by the shooters. Her father, Rajbir Sidhu was a National shooter while her uncle was a gunsmith and also customized guns. Her brother too took interest in shooting. She lived in a joint family who had been deeply influenced by her seniors in the family. In her childhood she along with her brother Karanbir used to get fascinated by their father’s guns. Later her brother Karanbir Sidhu took up the sport to become a professional shooter. Sidhu completed her schooling from Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. She spent her childhood mostly in Punjab before moving to Mumbai permanently.

After completing her schooling, Sidhu took admission in a dental college to get her bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery. Heena got married to Ronak Pandit on 7th February, 2013. Ronak is also a professional pistol shooter and also coaches Heena Sidhu. After her marriage, Heena shifted to Mumbai and currently lives in Goregaon, Mumbai. She has a small family that comprises of her husband, herself and her two daughters.

Sidhu had a keen interest in shooting as she used to see her father practice when she was a child. She used to enjoy the sport a lot in her childhood and had never imagined of competing in Olympics one day. When she took up shooting as a professional sport, she opted for the most sophisticated and conventional weapon for shooting, rifle . But rifle required lots of maintenance and needed many things such as eyepiece, gas cylinders, heavy jackets, stiff trousers, heavy shoes, stands and many more. As a result she decided to take up pistol for the full time and never chose rifle since then. Sidhu started her professional shooting journey in 2006 when she participated in the national junior and senior teams. She was a member of Patiala club where she used to go and practice. The next year saw her win Bronze Medal at Asian Championships, Kuwait, 2007. Heena received International recognition after she won her first International medal in the year 2009 at the ISSF World Cup in Beijing. She won the silver medal in that tournament. In the same year she won the first place in the women’s 10 m air pistol event at the national championship in Kerala. Her golden run continued as she won two silver and one gild medal in 2010 in Asian Games and Commonwealth games. She won the gold medal in shooting at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal in Women’s 10m Air Pistol. She also won another Silver medal in shooting Asian Games that year. That was a turning point of her career as many people had started recognizing her for her success. Sidhu was a member of the Indian team to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. She competed in the women’s 10 metre air pistol event In the 2014 Indian National Shooting trials, Sidhu won by 0.1 point over Rahi Sarnobat in the women’s air pistol event. She finished fourteenth in the women’s 10 metre air pistol and twentieth in the women’s 25 metre pistol qualifying rounds.
