Euro 2024: Underdogs Shine as Giants Stumble

Euro 2024

In a tournament filled with surprises, Euro 2024 continues to leave football fans gaping with shock worldwide. We’ve seen underdogs rise to first position in their respective groups, while traditional favorites have encountered unexpected difficulties. Each stage and match has brought its share of turns and twists at every corner.

Underdogs Domination

The biggest shock of the group stage came in Group D, where Austria stunned powerhouses France and the Netherlands to claim the top spot. Marcel Sabitzer’s late winner secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Dutch, cementing Austria’s place in history as unlikely group winners. This remarkable achievement showcases the unpredictable nature of international football and the rising competitiveness of so-called “smaller” nations.

Another underdog making waves in the football scene is Slovenia, who reached the knockout stages of the Euros for the first time in their history. Their goalless draw against England was enough to secure qualification from Group C, eliminating 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia in the process.

Ronaldo Defies Father Time

At age 39, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy expectations on the international stage. The Portuguese superstar has shown no signs of slowing down, leading his team with the same passion and skill that have defined his illustrious career. Ronaldo’s longevity and impact on the pitch serve as an inspiration to younger players and a testament to his incredible work ethic. His presence alone makes Portugal a formidable contender in the knockout stages.

England’s Defensive Approach Raises Eyebrows

Despite topping Group C, England’s defensive playing strategy have left much to be pondered upon. Manager Gareth Southgate’s conservative approach has come under scrutiny, particularly given the abundance of attacking talent at his disposal. The Three Lions’ goalless draw against Slovenia highlighted their struggles to break down organized defenses, despite boasting stars like Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka in their ranks.

England’s cautious style has frustrated fans and pundits alike, who argue that the team is not making the most of its offensive firepower. As they progress to the knockout stages, questions remain about whether this defensive mindset will be enough to overcome stronger opposition in the upcoming matches.

France’s Goal Drought Continues

Les Bleus have struggled to find the back of the net from easy play throughout the tournament. Their 1-1 draw with Poland further highlighted this issue, with Kylian Mbappé’s penalty being their only goal. The team’s inability to convert chances into goals is becoming a concerning trend for manager Didier Deschamps.

France has yet to score from open play in Euro 2024, relying on an own goal against Austria and a penalty against Poland. This goal drought is particularly surprising given the star-studded attacking lineup of Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Olivier Giroud. As they advance to the knockout stages as Group D runners-up, France will need to find their scoring touch again to live up to their expectations.
