Lionel Messi and Argentina, the defending Copa America champions, secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chile. The Chile vs Argentina match win took Messi and Co into the quarterfinals of the Copa America with a game to spare in Group A.

For nearly the entire game, Argentina dominated possession and peppered the Chilean goal. However, a single, dramatic moment in the 88th minute settled the contest.

Lautaro Martinez Scores Decisive Goal

The winning goal came from Lautaro Martínez, who entered the match as a substitute in the 73rd minute. A scramble in front of the Chilean net saw a series of rebounds following a Messi-initiated corner kick. The ball bounced around between players from both sides before finally falling to Martinez, who calmly slotted it into the net.

“The ball ended up right at me and I was able to convert it,” said Martínez, who also scored in Argentina’s opening win against Canada.

The goal, Martinez’s 26th for Argentina, was confirmed after a video review, leaving the players waiting anxiously for three minutes.

Despite controlling most of the match (Chile vs Argentina), Argentina struggled to convert their dominance into goals. They outshot Chile 22-3 and had a staggering 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. Lionel Messi, who celebrated his 37th birthday a day prior, continuously threatened the Chilean defense with his trademark dribbling skills. He nearly broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a powerful shot that grazed the post.

Lionel Messi and Claudio Bravo

The match held extra significance for both Messi and Chile’s goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo. The encounter took place at MetLife Stadium, the very same venue where Chile defeated Argentina on penalties in the 2016 Copa America final. That defeat famously led Messi to announce his retirement from international football, a decision he later reversed.

Adding to the sentimental value, the match fell on the 46th anniversary of Argentina’s first World Cup title. Notably, Messi and Bravo, former teammates at Barcelona, exchanged a friendly conversation while leading their teams out for the national anthems.

Bravo Shines Despite Defeat

Despite the loss, 41-year-old Bravo, the oldest player in Copa America history, displayed impressive resilience in goal. He made eight crucial saves throughout the match, which was his 150th international appearance.

“Losing this way leaves a bitter taste,” Bravo admitted. “We played against a tremendous opponent.”

Argentina currently leads Group A with 6 points. They will conclude the group stage against Peru on Saturday, while Chile faces Canada in a crucial match for both teams’ qualification hopes.
