Bangladesh Batters Breaks 25-Year-Old Record
Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali played a remarkable innings against India in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Their partnership not only helped Bangladesh score a respectable total, but it also broke several records. Their 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket is now the highest for that wicket or lower against India in any ICC ODI event.
Before this match, the record was held by New Zealand’s Chris Cairns and Chris Harris, who scored 122 runs in the 2000 Champions Trophy final. Here’s a look at the highest sixth-wicket or lower partnerships against India in ICC ODI events:
- Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali (Bangladesh): 154 runs, 2025 Champions Trophy, Dubai
- Chris Cairns, Chris Harris (New Zealand): 122 runs, 2000 Champions Trophy, Nairobi
- ID Blackwell, AJ Stewart (England): 104 runs, 2002 Champions Trophy, Colombo
- MA Ouma, BJ Patel (Kenya): 92 runs, 2004 Champions Trophy, Southampton
- KT Athurton, Carl Hooper (West Indies): 83 runs, 1992 Cricket World Cup, Wellington
Furthermore, Hridoy and Jaker’s stand is now the highest sixth-wicket partnership against India in all ODI cricket. They beat the previous record held by Sri Lanka’s Russel Arnold and Marven Atapattu, who scored 133 runs in 2005.
Only one partnership has been higher for the sixth wicket or lower against India in ODI history. That was Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner’s 162-run stand for the seventh wicket in 2023. Before Hridoy and Jaker, Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan Miraz had the second highest with 148 runs for the seventh wicket in 2022.
In ICC ODI events, Hridoy and Jaker’s partnership is tied for the third-highest for the sixth wicket or lower. They share this spot with Daren Sammy and Lendl Simmons, who also scored 154 runs in the 2015 World Cup. The highest partnerships are:
- Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell: 202 runs (Australia vs Afghanistan, 2023 World Cup)
- Alex Cusack and Kevin O’Brien: 162 runs (Ireland vs England, 2011 World Cup)6
- Maurice Omondi Odumbe and Alpesh Vadher: 161 runs (Kenya vs Sri Lanka, 1999 World Cup)
This is also the highest sixth-wicket partnership for Bangladesh in ODI cricket history. Interestingly, Jaker Ali was also part of the previous best stand, when he and Mahmudullah scored 150 runs against West Indies last year. Only Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz have a higher partnership for the sixth wicket or lower for Bangladesh, with 174 runs for the seventh wicket in 2022.
However, their partnership did include some lucky moments. Rohit Sharma dropped Jaker Ali on the first ball of his inning. Hardik Pandya dropped Towhid Hridoy when he was playing on 23 runs. Also, KL Rahul missed a stumping of Jaker Ali when he was on 24.
With these lucky breaks, Hridoy and Jaker played with great skill and determination. They showed that even when a team is in trouble, a strong partnership can change the game. Their records will be remembered for a long time.
