Athletic Club referred to as Athletic Bilbao is a Spanish team based in the city of Bilbao situated in the Basque country Spain. Home matches are played in the stadium named as San Mames, the name of the stadium was inspired by the church called San Mames as they built their stadium close to the church.

History

The Club was founded in 1898, the idea of the club came to the minds of two groups, Britain workers and Basque students.  In the early 19th century Bilbao was a major industrial city as many migrant workers, shipyard workers from Southampton, Portsmouth, Sunderland, and miners from North East England were attracted to it.

They all came together to form the club Bilbao Football Club. On the other hand the sons of Basque students went to Britain and pursued their studies and grew their interest in football. Later they started to play matches with the British workers.

Ownership

Athletic Club Bilbao is a fan-owned club it is run by its socios, in the 2019-20 season, there are 44.560 socials in the club. The squad value of the club is 241m Euros as recorded by transfer market. Athletic Bilbao doesn’t spend in the transfer market as they rely on their academy player, 85% of their first team player are from their academy itself.
