Argentina vs Ecuador: Lionel Messi’s team survives penalty scare, who will they face in Copa America semis

Football, Lionel Messi

Argentina, the defending champions of Copa America, edged past Ecuador 4-2 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw in Texas. The victory in the Argentina vs Ecuador match secures Lionel Messi’s team’s place in the coveted semi-finals for the 5th time in a row. Now, who will they face in the semifinals on Tuesday?

The match was crucial for both teams as it was a knockout match. Argentina took the lead in the first half thanks to a well-placed header by Lisandro Martínez, following a corner from Lionel Messi. However, disaster almost struck for Argentina when Ecuador was awarded a penalty after a handball by Rodrigo De Paul. Luckily for them, Enner Valencia’s penalty strike hit the post, keeping the score at 1-0.

The second half saw a shift in momentum. In dramatic injury-time, substitute Kevin Rodríguez leveled the score for Ecuador with a powerful header. Just when it seemed a winner wouldn’t be decided, the match went to penalties.

The penalty shootout itself was a nail-biting affair. Argentina, going first, suffered a setback when Lionel Messi’s trademark Panenka attempt clattered off the crossbar. However, Argentina’s hero emerged in the form of their goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez. Just like he did in the 2022 World Cup final, Martinez saved two crucial penalties from Ecuador, giving Argentina a fighting chance.

With the pressure mounting, Julián Álvarez and Alexis Mac Allister stepped up for Argentina, calmly converting their penalties. Argentina regained the lead in the shootout 2-0. Both teams traded goals until the final kick, where Nicolas Otamendi, who came on as a substitute, coolly slotted home the winning penalty.

The victory in the Argentina vs Ecuador clash extends Argentina’s impressive Copa America record. They have now reached the semi-finals in 5 consecutive tournaments, with a runners-up finish in 2015 and 2016, a third-place finish in 2019, and a championship win in 2021. Their next challenge will be against the winner of the Venezuela vs Canada quarterfinal, scheduled for July 5th.
