Will Mohammed Shami participate in the Border Gavaskar Trophy?

Mohammed Shami, Border Gavaskar Trophy

The participation of Mohammed Shami in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy remains uncertain due to his ankle injury. The Indian pacer is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, and his return to competitive cricket will depend on a final fitness assessment from the academy.

Mohammed Shami sustained the ankle injury during the ODI World Cup in November 2023. Since then, he has been working diligently on his recovery, gradually increasing his bowling workload. The latest reports indicate that he has been experiencing no pain during his rehabilitation sessions, which is a positive sign for his recovery.

The BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, has emphasized that Shami’s participation in the Australia series hinges on the NCA’s final assessment. This indicates that the selectors will only include him in the squad if the medical team deems him fully fit and ready to compete at the highest level.

Shami’s absence would be a significant loss for the Indian team, especially considering his impressive record in Australia. In eight Tests Down Under, he has taken 31 wickets at an average of 32.16, including two five-wicket hauls. His ability to exploit Australian conditions makes him a valuable asset for the Indian bowling attack.

In addition to Shami’s fitness update, the BCCI also confirmed that VVS Laxman will continue as the head of the NCA. Laxman, who took over the role in December 2021, has been instrumental in overseeing the rehabilitation of injured players. His contract was set to expire in September, but it has been extended to ensure continuity at the academy during this crucial period.

The NCA’s role in Shami’s recovery is crucial. The academy’s medical staff has been closely monitoring his progress and providing him with the necessary support to aid his rehabilitation. Their expertise and guidance will be invaluable in determining whether Shami is ready to represent India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

As the series approaches, Indian cricket fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Shami’s fitness. His potential return would provide a major boost to the Indian team’s chances of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
