Team India hammered Pakistan by 4 goals to nil at the Sree Kantareeva stadium in Bengaluru in SAFF Championship 2023 opener. But the match also produced a heated altercation between the Indian and Pakistani camp. India’s Croatian head coach Igor Stimac sparked all the tension as he received his marching orders after the lengthy brawl.
The overall glorifying night for India was somehow hit by a calorific event. The match was going very smoothly until the closing minutes of the first-half. Team India’s head coach Igor Stimac began the row as he clearly restricted Pakistani Center-back Abdullah Iqbal from throwing the ball in after the referee claimed it was Pakistan’s outside.
It occurred in the 44th minute when Pakistan were trying to build a move from the left side before Sandesh Jhingan interrupted and passed the ball to Pritam Kotal. The Indian right-back tried to find his team mates up front the ball went out of play as a result of a ricochet.

While the referee gave Pakistan the throw in, Stimac was agitated as he thought it came off Abdullah Iqbal. Kotal received the ball with his left foot, made some room ahead of him with a swift touch. Then he tried to pick out a pass but he ended up hitting his left foot as a result of constant pressure from the Pakistani Center-back.

When Iqbal raised his arms for the throw in, Igor Stimac entered the scene from sidelines and snatched the ball to showcase his disagreement with the referee’s decision. As a consequence, bodies flooded in from the pitch to the sidelines which halted the game indefinitely.
Assistant of Igor Stimac calls the red card a tad too harsh!
Following the resolve, referee Prajwal Chhetri from Nepal showed a straight red card to Igor Stimac. Though it did not put any impact on India’s performance or result for that case but his assistant Mahesh Gawli said the decision was a little too harsh.
“Yeah, it was an offence that if you go by the book often attracts a red card. But yeah, but then we feel that it might have been a bit harsh on the coach.” – Gawli concluded.
