Tottenham Hotspur faces Manchester City in Sunday’s Premier League clash in North London. Tottenham look to get back on track in the race for the Premier League top four when they host Manchester City on Sunday.

Tottenham

It’s been all change at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the last week as plenty of faces have come and gone from the club, but on Sunday Jose Mourinho’s attention is firmly fixed on getting a result over long-term adversary Pep Guardiola.

Spurs have had a difficult time of things since the festive period, but their draw against Southampton in the FA Cup last weekend made it four competitive games without defeat, and their victory over Norwich last week ended a run of four winless Premier League matches.

Even after this downturn Spurs still remain in the hunt for a top four position, sitting 6th in the table and six points adrift of Chelsea in 4th. Obviously getting the points on Sunday won’t be an easy task, but with only three defeats in their 12 Premier League home games this season it would be foolish to write Mourinho’s men off.

Manchester City

Manchester City endured a gruelling midweek battle with their cross-city rivals as well, losing 1-0 at home to Manchester United but progressing to the Carabao Cup Final on aggregate. That match will have taken a lot out of an already weary looking squad, and the widening gulf between themselves and Liverpool must be taking its toll on the players’ mindset.

Indeed, the Citizens have slipped up far more often than we are used to this season. They have only won 16 of their 24 league games, and away from home they have lost three times. This is in no small part thanks to their increasingly vulnerable looking defence, which has conceded 15 goals on the road and kept just four clean sheets.

That being said, Man City have scored in 23 consecutive Premier League away games, and they’re facing a Spurs side that have conceded in 10 of their 12 Premier League home games this season. However, with Spurs also scoring in nine of these and averaging 1.92 goals per game, we think backing both teams to score is a great choice.

In the end, we’re expecting Spurs to upset the odds and get something from this game. They drew 2-2 at the Etihad earlier this season and have only lost three home games, while Mourinho has avoided defeat in 13 of his 23 managerial meetings with Pep Guardiola. With Spurs averaging 1.92 goals per home game and Man City averaging 2.82 goals per away game, backing a high scoring 2-2 draw looks good.

TOT VS MCI: Predicted starting lineup

Tottenham: Lloris; Aurier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Tanganga; Dier, Lo Celso, Alli; Lamela, Lucas, Son.

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Fernandinho, Laporte, Mendy; Rodri, De Bruyne, D Silva; Mahrez, Aguero, Sterling.

TOT VS MCI: Best players

Tottenham: Dele Alli

Only four players have appeared in every league game since Jose Mourinho took charge. Serge Aurier and Toby Alderweireld have been ever-present in defence whilst Lucas Moura has been used either on the flank or leading the attack.

The other member of this quartet is Dele Alli whom Mourinho challenged to rediscover his form prior to his debut match at West Ham. Alli responded by becoming their standout performer under his tutelage. He will be key this weekend, playing between the midfield and forward lines, as Spurs will seek to disrupt City’s possession game.

Key stat: Dele Alli has been involved in the most Premier League goals by a Spurs player under Jose Mourinho (five goals and three assists).

Manchester City: Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin De Bruyne is back to his sensational best. A spate of injuries reduced the Belgian playmaker to just 19 league appearances last season. And to say he’s making up for lost time is an understatement. Although it seems City will not make a second consecutive successful defence of their championship, there’s a strong chance De Bruyne will be named player of the season and for a very good reason.

There isn’t a midfielder in the Premier League at his level. No one possesses his range of passing, which enables him to create several chances per game, and no match typified this than the reverse fixture with Spurs. Having watched from afar, and De Bruyne closely this season, there’s no question Mourinho will have formulated a plan to take care of him.

Key stat: Kevin De Bruyne has created the most chances from open play in this season’s Premier League (63).
