Suryakumar Yadav appears set to be named India’s new T20I captain, edging out current vice-captain Hardik Pandya for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. This comes after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja stepped down from the format following India’s T20 World Cup victory in the Caribbean.
Suryakumar will succeed Rohit Sharma, who led India to World Cup glory. While Hardik Pandya served as Rohit’s deputy and boasts more experience as captain – having led India in ODIs and T20Is as well as IPL teams – concerns about his fitness and workload management might be the deciding factor.

Hardik Pandya suffered an ankle injury during the 50-over World Cup last year and missed significant action until the recent IPL season. This limited him to only 46 out of 79 T20Is India played since the beginning of 2022.

Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, has prior captaincy experience with Mumbai in domestic tournaments. He also recently led India to successful T20I series wins against Australia and South Africa. Moreover, Suryakumar is a mainstay in India’s preferred T20I playing XI.
The Sri Lanka tour marks the first assignment under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who takes over from Rahul Dravid. It’s also seen as a starting point for building a team towards the next T20 World Cup co-hosted by India in 2026.
A separate young Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, just secured a 4-1 T20I series victory in Zimbabwe. This squad included only three players from the World Cup-winning team.
The selectors are expected to finalize the touring party for Sri Lanka on Wednesday. The tour will consist of three T20Is and three ODIs.
The appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as captain would mark a significant shift in Indian T20I leadership. His recent success and fitness record could be seen as crucial factors in this decision. With a new coach and a focus on building for the future, India’s T20I team is entering a period of exciting change.
