Stephen Fleming Steps Down As CSK Head Coach After 18 Years

Stephen Flemming, CSK

Chennai Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to part ways after 18 years together, bringing an end to one of the longest coach-team relationships in the history of the Indian Premier League. The decision came after CSK failed to reach the IPL playoffs for the third season in a row, which pushed the franchise to rethink its coaching setup.

Why CSK And Fleming Decided To Part Ways

CSK’s managing director Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that both sides sat down and had an honest talk about the season before agreeing to move in different directions. He explained that after looking closely at the full campaign, the two sides felt it was best to part ways mutually.

This decision did not come only from how CSK performed in the IPL. The franchise also runs sister teams in other leagues, and those results played a role too. CSK’s team in Major League Cricket, called Texas Super Kings, finished at the bottom of the table this year. Along with weak results in the SA20 league, the full picture across leagues pushed the management to look for a new direction rather than stick with the same setup.

Viswanathan also made it clear that the franchise has not picked a new coach yet, even though former CSK player Hemang Badani’s name has come up as a possible option. He said the team has only just finished the process of parting ways with Fleming and will now begin looking at fresh options, both from India and from abroad.

Fleming’s Long Journey With CSK

Stephen Fleming’s story with CSK goes back to the very first season of the IPL, where he played as a batter for the team. He then moved into coaching and took charge as head coach ahead of the 2009 season, taking over from Kepler Wessels. From that point on, Fleming built one of the most successful coaching records in IPL history.

Under his guidance, CSK won five IPL titles, making him the most decorated coach in the tournament’s history. Along with these IPL wins, he also helped the team lift two Champions League T20 titles during his time in charge. These numbers alone show why Fleming is seen as such an important figure in the CSK setup, having stayed with one franchise for nearly two decades, which is rare in modern sport.

A Change In Fleming’s Role After Dhoni Stepped Down As Captain

For many years, Fleming worked closely with MS Dhoni, who led CSK as captain for a long period. However, things began to shift after the 2023 season, when Dhoni stepped down as captain and handed the leadership role to Ruturaj Gaikwad. From that point, Fleming’s role in the team became more visible and central to decision-making.

But the three seasons that followed this change did not go the way CSK had hoped. In each of those three seasons, the team failed to make the playoffs, and in 2025, CSK even finished at the bottom of the table. These results added pressure on the coaching staff and the overall team structure, even though the franchise still gave Fleming plenty of support and time to fix things.

Auction Struggles And Squad Issues

One of the bigger problems for CSK in recent seasons has been building a strong squad at the auction table, something the franchise was once known for doing very well. In the last mega auction, CSK moved away from its usual style of picking experienced players and tried a slightly different approach, but this did not work out as planned, and the team looked out of its depth.

Then, ahead of the most recent season, CSK went in a different direction again. This time, in the mini auction, they focused on picking younger players instead of experienced ones. However, this fresh approach also did not lead to good results, and the team once again had a season below expectations.

Along with these auction issues, there were also some big decisions that raised questions among close followers of the team. One such move was letting go of bowler Matheesha Pathirana, a player in whom the franchise had invested heavily and who had strong backing from Dhoni himself. Losing a key bowler like Pathirana, along with the auction misses, added to the string of factors that made this season a difficult one for CSK on the field.

What CSK’s Management Said About Fleming’s Exit

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath shared a warm message while confirming Fleming’s departure, thanking him for his long service to the franchise. She said that on behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, they wanted to express deep gratitude for Fleming’s steady commitment, passion, and leadership over the years. She added that while their time working together on the field has come to an end, Fleming will always remain a key part of the team’s history and legacy.

This kind of message shows that even though the results did not go CSK’s way in recent seasons, the franchise still holds a lot of respect and warmth for what Fleming built during his 18 years in charge.

MS Dhoni’s Role

Even though Fleming has stepped down, MS Dhoni is expected to remain closely involved in shaping CSK’s future path. At the moment, it is still not clear whether Dhoni has played his final match as a player or not. But regardless of his playing future, reports suggest that Dhoni could take on an important role in helping the franchise plan its next steps.

Dhoni is currently in the United Kingdom, and it is understood that he could use this time to meet possible coaching candidates alongside events connected to The Hundred tournament. This shows that even without Fleming in the coaching seat, Dhoni’s voice and presence in CSK’s decision-making process remain strong.

Who Will Take Over As Head Coach

With Fleming gone, the question of who takes over as head coach is now open. Viswanathan made it clear that the franchise has not settled on any name yet and is willing to look at candidates from both India and other countries. There is also a sense that CSK could lean towards an Indian coach this time, especially since local players have taken on a bigger role within the squad in recent seasons.

It has also been said that the incoming coach will have the freedom to shape the support staff around him. Viswanathan explained that it is only fair for the new head coach to either bring in his own team or choose to continue working with some of the existing staff members. This shows that CSK is trying to give whoever comes in next the full support needed to build things their own way, rather than forcing them to work under Fleming’s old system.

A Long Chapter Comes To A Close

Stephen Fleming’s exit closes out the longest stint any coach has had with a single team in IPL history. From playing in the very first season to becoming the most successful coach the tournament has seen, his story with CSK covers almost the entire history of the IPL itself.

As CSK now looks toward picking a new head coach before the next mega auction, the franchise finds itself trying to build a clear picture of its core group and direction, after some difficult seasons on and off the field across different leagues.
