Rohan Bopanna-Wesley Koolhof Clinch Doubles Title At Qatar Open

The Indo-Dutch pair of Rohan Bopanna and Wesley Koolhof have kicked off the new decade with a bang as the pair won the Qatar Open title on Friday. The duo of Bopanna and Wesley Koolhof won their first title of the year 2020 by beating the British-Mexican pair of Luke Bambridge and Santiago Gonzalez in Doha on Friday.

The Indo-Dutch pair of Rohan Bopanna and Koolhof, clinched the title with a 3-6 6-2 10-6 victory in the final, which lasted for an hour and 12 minutes. Bopanna and Wesley Koolhof lost the first set 3-6.However, the Indo-Dutch pair bounced back in the second set. The pair, playing their first tournament of the year clinched five straight point from 4/4 in the match tie-break before eventually lifting the title on their third championship point.

After the victory, ace Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna said, “I am very happy that I got a chance to come to Doha for the first time and win. This win with Koolhof is special.” On the other hand his partner from Netherlands said that he has been starting off his seasons well from the last couple of years.

The Indo-Dutch pair earlier on Friday had pinned the second seeded Finnish-Croatian pair of Henri Kontinen and Franco Skugor in straight game to enter the men’s doubles final. The third seeded pair of Bopanna and Koolhof defeated Finnish-Croatian pair 7-5 6-2 in the semi-finals. While their opponents in the final, Luke Bambridge and Santiago Gonzalez defeated Denmark’s Frederick Nielsen and Tim Puetz of Germany 2-6 6-2 10-4 in the second semi-final.

The third-seeded duo of Bopanna and Coolhoff had also swept aside the pair of Stan Wawrinka and Francis Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4. India’s Divij Sharan and his Kiwi partner Artem Sitak lost 6-7 (4), 2-6 to France’s Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin in the first round.
