The Paris Olympics 2024 are throwing out the traditional stadium opening ceremony and instead taking the party to the iconic Seine River. In the opening ceremony, boats carrying athletes from over 200 countries will glide through the heart of the City of Lights as thousands of fans cheer from the banks.
Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris Olympics 2024 organizing committee, describes this ambitious move as transforming the entire city into a vast Olympic stadium. The Seine becomes the stage, and the historic landmarks lining its banks become the backdrop for a truly unforgettable event.

The adventure begins at Pont d’Austerlitz bridge, named after a famous Napoleonic battle. Imagine over 80-100 boats carrying athletes representing 206 nations, setting sail on a 6-kilometer journey along the Seine. As the sun sets, the flotilla will weave its way through 18 bridges, passing iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, before reaching its final destination at Pont d’Iéna.

The exact details of the ceremony performances are still under wraps. Over 3,000 artists are expected to participate, and the organizers are taking full advantage of the unique setting. Dance choreography head Maud Le Pladec even hinted that “there won’t be a single bridge in Paris without some dancers on it.” To orchestrate this artistic extravaganza, renowned theatre director Thomas Jolly has been brought on board.
One of the biggest advantages of this unconventional ceremony is its inclusivity. By holding a significant portion of the event on the river, the organizers can accommodate far more people than any traditional stadium could. Apart from the dedicated 13,000-seat Champions Park arena near the Eiffel Tower, a whopping 326,000 tickets have been made available for public viewing.

- Free Tickets: Over 222,000 free tickets are available to watch the boat procession from the upper banks of the Seine.
- Paid Seating: For a closer look, paid tickets ranging from €90 to €2,700 are available for spots along the lower quays.
- Giant Screens: Don’t have a ticket? No worries! Eight giant screens will be set up throughout the city for public gatherings.
Of course, hosting such a large-scale event outdoors comes with its own set of challenges. Security is a major concern, especially with athletes and world leaders in attendance. The recent rise of extremist activities in Europe adds another layer of complexity.
The ever-changing Seine River also presents logistical hurdles. A planned rehearsal in June had to be canceled due to strong currents. To address these concerns, President Macron has assured the public of a Plan B and a Plan C. These could involve shifting the ceremony to Trocadero Square near the Eiffel Tower, or even relocating it entirely to the Stade de France, the national stadium. Rest assured, the organizers are prepared to adapt to any last-minute changes.
