The Mumbai Indians (MI) IPL 2024 campaign is ending in a heartbreak, and it’s been a season of disappointment for their fans. The team, which has won the IPL a record five times, became the first to get out of playoff contention. One of the biggest talking points after their dismal performance has been MI’s change in captaincy. MI management gave leadership to Hardik Pandya, who took over the reins from Rohit Sharma this year.
Hardik arrived at MI with a strong leadership credential. He had just led the Gujarat Titans, a new franchise, to victory in their debut IPL season (2022). They even reached the finals again in 2023. This success raised expectations for him to replicate that magic with MI.
However, things didn’t go according to plan for Hardik at MI. The team managed only 4 wins in 13 matches, leading to their early exit from the tournament. This was a stark contrast to his success with Gujarat Titans.
Hardik Pandya on his leadership
Despite the results, Hardik defended his captaincy style. He described it as a simple approach focused on creating a positive environment for the players. On ‘Captains Speak’ segment of Star Sports Hardik Pandya said, “I think my captaincy is simple. It’s just Hardik Pandya playing with 10 other of his teammates. The mantra is simple. Looking after the players, you give them the confidence, you give them the belief, you give them the love. They will go out and give more than 100 percent and that’s something I ask for.”
Hardik’s Performance in IPL 2024
It wasn’t just the team’s performance that was under scrutiny. Hardik himself had a forgettable season on a personal level. He scored only 200 runs in 12 innings, averaging just 18.18. His bowling figures were decent, with 11 wickets in 11 matches, but his economy rate of 10.58 was on the higher side.
The vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for T20 World Cup 2024 clarified that he doesn’t solely focus on results. Instead, he prioritizes the approach players take on the field. He believes that if the players adopt a winning approach, the results will eventually follow.
With the IPL season over, questions remain about Hardik’s captaincy. Did MI struggle because of his leadership, or were there other factors at play, like a weaker squad compared to previous years?
Only time will tell how this experience shapes Hardik’s future as a captain. He will undoubtedly learn from this challenging season and look to improve his leadership skills. Whether he gets another chance to lead MI or another team remains to be seen. However, his performance with the Gujarat Titans proves his leadership potential.
