The 28th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 witnessed a complete domination by England as they demolished Oman by a massive 8-wicket margin. Played at North Sound on June 13th, 2024, the match will be remembered for England’s ruthless display with the bat, chasing down a paltry target of 48 in a mere 19 balls. Meanwhile
Oman’s batting woes began from the very first ball. Their openers, Pratik Athavale and Kashyap Prajapati, were dismissed cheaply by Jofra Archer and Mark Wood respectively. The rest of the batting order crumbled under pressure, with none of the batsmen managing to reach even 20 runs. Shoaib Khan (11 runs) was the only players who managed to reach double digits.

Oman’s batting fragility was exposed by England’s pace attack. Jofra Archer (3 wickets for 12 runs) and Mark Wood (3 wickets for 12 runs) shared six wickets between them, ripping through the top and middle order. Adil Rashid, the leg-spinner, joined the party by picking up 4 crucial wickets for just 11 runs, completely derailing Oman’s innings. Oman were bundled out for a mere 47 runs in 13.2 overs, their lowest ever total in T20 Internationals.
Needing just 48 runs for victory, England openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler wasted no time in putting the game to bed. Salt smashed 12 runs off just 3 balls before being dismissed by Bilal Khan. However, the damage had already been done. The experienced Jos Buttler (24 runs off 8 balls) continued the onslaught, finding the boundary with ease. Jonny Bairstow joined the party with a quickfire 8 runs off 2 balls, ensuring a swift victory for England.

England’s win was a record-breaking one in several aspects:
- England chased the target in just 19 balls. Their win by 101 balls is now the biggest in terms of balls to spare in men’s T20Is. The previous biggest win by balls belongs to Sri Lanka, who won the match with 90 balls to spare in 2014 against Netherlands.
- Oman’s total of 47 runs against England is the 4th lowest by any team in the Men’s T20 World Cup. The 39 all out is the lowest, by Netherlands against Sri Lanka in 2014 and Uganda against West Indies in 2024. In T20 World Cup 2021 edition, Netherlands also got bowled out by Sri Lanka for 44.
- Against England, the 47 run all-out is the second lowest total in men’s T20I. West Indies scored the lowest total of 45 runs against Englishmen in 2019.
Adil Rashid: Man of the Match
While the entire England bowling attack was phenomenal, Adil Rashid was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match for his exceptional spell of 4 wickets for just 11 runs.
This victory further cements England’s position as one of the strongest contenders for the T20 World Cup 2024 title. Their ruthless display with both bat and ball leaves a strong message for the other teams in the tournament as they vie for the spot in Super 8.
