Former Indian batsman Ambati Rayudu has secured a contract with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots as a marquee player for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023. The tournament is slated to take place from August 17 to September 25, coinciding with the conclusion of Team India’s tour of the West Indies.

Rayudu’s potential participation in the CPL could make him the second Indian player to feature in the league, following veteran spinner Pravin Tambe’s groundbreaking stint with the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2020. However, Rayudu’s inclusion is contingent upon the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The BCCI is considering the implementation of a one-year cooling-off period for retired Indian players before they can engage in overseas leagues. Rayudu formally parted ways with Indian cricket after the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, during which he clinched the title with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Initially set to represent the Texas Super Kings (TSK) in the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States, Rayudu withdrew from the tournament due to the behind-the-scenes plans of the BCCI. Whether this rule will affect his participation in the 2023 CPL remains to be seen.
Rayudu expressed his anticipation for the potential stint in the CPL, stating, “I’m really excited to be joining the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. I look forward to making a positive contribution to the team in the upcoming CPL 2023.”
Mahesh Ramani, owner of the Patriots, shared his thoughts in a statement, saying, “I am confident that Ambati’s extensive experience, having secured multiple championships with different teams during his illustrious career in India, will undoubtedly enhance the development of our young players as we strive for our second CPL title in 2023.”
Rayudu’s role in IPL 2023 primarily revolved around being an impact player. With his most recent competitive appearance in this tournament, he amassed 158 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 139.82.
As the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots undergo a leadership transition with Dwayne Bravo’s departure, Evin Lewis is poised to lead the franchise. The team’s campaign will commence with a match against the Trinbago Knight Riders on August 19 in St. Lucia.
Moreover, Rayudu’s involvement in the CPL would place him within an exclusive category, as only a handful of Indian players have ventured into overseas leagues, fulfilling the cooling period criteria. Players like Unmukt Chand, who participated in the Big Bash League (BBL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and Major League Cricket, and Robin Uthappa, who represented the Dubai Capitals in the International League T20 (ILT20), have contributed to this unique list. Notably, seasoned players such as S Sreesanth and Yusuf Pathan have also recently marked their presence in foreign leagues.
