Sumit Nagal Makes History at Australian Open, Beats Alexander Bublik
Sumit Nagal, India's top-ranked men's singles tennis player, surged to a historic victory.
He defeated 31st-seeded Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 [7-5] in the first round of the Australian Open 2024.
Nagal, World No. 137, easily defeated a player ranked 100 places higher than him.
He became the first Indian man since Ramesh Krishnan to defeat a seed in a Grand Slam men's singles match.
Krishnan defeated then-World No.1 and defending champion Mats Wilander in the second round of the Australian Open back in 1989.
Notably, Krishnan has defeated a seeded athlete in a Grand Slam singles match four times in his career.
It happened three times: in the quarterfinals of the 1981 and 1987 US Opens, as well as at Wimbledon in 1986.
