R Praggnanandhaa became India's No.1, surpasses Viswanathan Anand

After beating Ding Liren, Praggnanandhaa becomes India's top-ranked chess player in the FIDE's live ratings.

R Praggnanandhaa, an Indian chess prodigy, made history when he defeated reigning World Champion Ding Liren in the fourth round of the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zed on Tuesday, January 16.

Praggnanandhaa moved up two spots to 11th overall, earning 2748.3 rating points, 0.3 higher than Anand.

In addition, the 18-year-old became the second Indian, after Anand, to defeat a world champion in classical chess.

Playing with the black pieces, Praggnanandhaa grabbed an early edge and kept it throughout.

His victory over Ding Liren was his first in four rounds, following three ties to open the event.

Viswanathan Anand, the first Indian grandmaster and five-time world chess champion, has been compared to him due to his ability to overcome world-class opponents, including World Champions.
