Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk acknowledges wrongdoing in red card

The defender was adjudged to have denied Magpies' striker Alexander Isak a clear goalscoring opportunity by making a reckless challenge.

Van Dijk initially refused to leave the field and remonstrated angrily with referee John Brooks.

The FA disciplinary panel found that Van Dijk had "acted in an improper manner

And used abusive and insulting words towards a match official".

As a result, he was banned for an additional one match and fined £100,000.

Van Dijk has accepted the panel's decision and apologized for his actions.
