Kelvin Kiptum: World Marathon Record Holder Dies in Road Accident
Kelvin Kiptum was born on December 2, 1999 in Chepsamo, Chepkorio, Kenya. He was a long-distance runner.
Kiptum grew up in Chepsamo village, and he started training around 2013, when he was 13 years old.
Kiptum ran the fastest-ever marathon (42.195 km) by a debutant at the 2022 Valencia Marathon in a record 2:01:53 time.
Four months later, he ran the second-fastest marathon in history in 2:01:25 at the 2023 London Marathon.
Six months later, in October 2023, at the Chicago Marathon, the 23-year-old broke the world record by 34 seconds with a time of two hours and 35 seconds.
Kelvin ran three of the seven fastest marathons in history.
On Sunday, February 11, Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, died in a road accident.
At the time of his death, Kiptum was just 24, and he was ranked first in the world in the men's marathon rankings.
