In the inaugural Cricket World Cup in 1975, S. Venkataraghavan was the captain of Indian cricket team. India failed to progress beyond the group stage. It marked the beginning of India's journey in the ODI World Cup.

In the 1979 World Cup Venkataraghavan returned as Indian captain, but, the outcome was similar to 1975. India couldn't secure any victories in their three matches.

Kapil Dev took the reins of Indian cricket team in 1983 World Cup. He led India to its first-ever Cricket World Cup victory. India won six out of eight matches, including the memorable final against the West Indies.

In 1987 World Cup, Kapil Dev continued to captain the Indian team. Although India performed well and reached the semifinals but were unable to make it to the final stages of the tournament.

In 1992 World Cup, Mohammad Azharuddin was the captain of India. In eight matches, India secures only two wins in the round-robin format.

In 1996 World Cup, again Azharuddin was the captain of Indian team. This time, India reached semifinals, where they faced eventual champions Sri Lanka, ending their campaign at that stage.

The 1999, marked Azharuddin's third World Cup as captain. This time, India managed to progress to the Super Six stage but fell short of making it to the final.

Sourav Ganguly took India to the final of the 2003 World Cup but were runners-up to Australia. Ganguly's leadership was full of aggression and fearless cricket, which revitalized the Indian team.

In the 2007 World Cup, Rahul Dravid was the captain of team India. In this World Cup India could only secure one victory and was eliminated in the group stage.

In the 2011 World Cup, MS Dhoni took over the captaincy. Under Dhoni's leadership India saw a successful campaign, culminating in the memorable final against Sri Lanka.

MS Dhoni continued as skipper in the 2015 World Cup. India reached the semifinals but couldn't advance further.

In 2019 World Cup, Virat Kohli captained Team India. The team performed well but lost the semifinals against New Zealand.
