The Canadian province of Alberta has withdrawn its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

This is a major blow to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), as Alberta was the "preferred host" for the Games.

The decision to withdraw the bid was made by the Alberta government, citing high costs as the reason.

The government said that the Games would have cost an estimated CAD$700 million

(£420 million, $530 million, or €470 million), and that they could not justify the expense.

The withdrawal of Alberta's bid leaves the CGF in a difficult position.

The Games are scheduled to be held in 2030, but there is no other host city in the running.

The CGF has said that they will continue to search for a host city, but it is unclear if they will be able to find one.
