Uganda vs New Zealand: Black Caps Crushes Uganda after T20 World Cup 2024 exit

Uganda vs New Zealand, T20 World Cup 2024, UGN vs NZ

New Zealand cruised to a dominant 9-wicket victory over Uganda after their exit from T20 World Cup 2024. The Uganda vs New Zealand match at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad had no importance to both the teams as they are out of contention for the Super 8 round.

Right from the first ball, Uganda’s inexperienced batsmen were under immense pressure facing the lethal bowling attack of New Zealand. Trent Boult unleashed his trademark searing inswing deliveries, making it difficult for the openers to bat. His opening over set the tone for the innings, dismissing two batsmen – Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya – with pinpoint accuracy.

Tim Southee, New Zealand’s other frontline seamer, complemented Boult perfectly. He bowled a maiden over after Boult’s double-wicket haul, further tightening the grip on the Ugandan batsmen. They continued their domination throughout the powerplay, leaving Uganda reeling at a measly 9 for 3.

With the top order dismantled, the onus fell on the middle order to salvage some pride. However, Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand’s left-arm spinners, proved equally effective. Santner drew the outside edge of Ronak Patel, who was comfortably caught by wicketkeeper Devon Conway. Lockie Ferguson, New Zealand’s fast bowler, then joined the party by uprooting Kenneth Waiswa’s stumps.

The lack of experience and technique in the Ugandan batting lineup was evident as they struggled to score against the disciplined bowling attack. By the end of the 14th over, Uganda had lost 7 wickets for a paltry 27 runs. While they managed to avoid their lowest-ever T20 total (39 vs West Indies), their batting performance was a stark reminder of the gap between established teams and emerging nations.

Chasing a paltry target of 41, New Zealand never looked in trouble. They lost opener Finn Allen to a slightly fortunate catch off Riazat Ali Shah’s bowling. However, with just one wicket down, the result was never in doubt. Devon Conway and the experienced Kane Williamson ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding their team to victory in just 5.2 overs.

The Uganda vs New Zealand match was a one-sided affair. Facing world-class bowlers like Boult, Southee, and Santner is an excellent learning experience for Uganda. It also highlights the areas where they need improvement.

For New Zealand, this victory was just an ordinary one as their quest for the T20 World Cup 2024 title is over. Meanwhile, Uganda is also out of the World Cup, however, they have learnt and gained valuable experience while playing against stronger teams.
