The IPL silly season has arrived early this year, and it carries the scent of something historic. According to a report by ESPNCricinfo, the Indian Premier League could be on the verge of witnessing one of its most talked-about trades, Rishabh Pant returning to Delhi Capitals, and chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav making the reverse journey to Lucknow Super Giants. No official confirmation has come from either franchise yet, but as the old saying goes, there is no smoke without fire.
The trade makes sense from multiple angles. Both Pant and Kuldeep had underwhelming seasons in IPL 2026. Both find themselves at crossroads in their respective franchises. And crucially, both have enough left in the tank to prove that their best IPL days are not behind them.
Pant’s Purple Patch Fades in Lucknow
When Lucknow Super Giants shelled out a record-shattering INR 27 crore for Rishabh Pant at the IPL 2025 mega auction, the cricket world held its breath in anticipation. Here was a cricketer who had defied death itself, recovering from a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, and then came roaring back to form. The expectation was that Pant would transform LSG the way he once lit up Delhi.
It never quite happened.
In IPL 2025, his first season as LSG skipper, Pant scored 269 runs in 14 matches, decent, but not the explosive, match-winning Pant that fans had paid to see. LSG finished seventh on the points table that year. In IPL 2026, the wheels truly fell off. Pant managed 312 runs in 14 matches at an average of 28.36, with a strike rate of 138.05, a far cry from the swashbuckling 147+ career strike rate he had built up during his Delhi years. LSG crashed to the very bottom of the 10-team standings, managing just four wins.
The burden of captaincy had visibly weighed him down. On May 29, 2026, Pant made it official, he stepped down as LSG captain, requesting the franchise to relieve him of his leadership duties. LSG Director of Cricket Tom Moody confirmed the decision with a gracious statement: “Rishabh approached the franchise with his request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective, rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”
In total, Pant managed just 10 wins from 28 matches as LSG captain across two seasons, a record that simply did not justify the enormous investment.
Rishabh Pant’s IPL Career, Season by Season
To truly appreciate what Pant once was, and what he can still be, one must look at the full arc of his IPL journey.
| Season | Team | Matches | Runs | HS | Average | Strike Rate | 100s | 50s |
| 2016 | Delhi Daredevils | 10 | 198 | 69 | 24.75 | 130.26 | 0 | 1 |
| 2017 | Delhi Daredevils | 14 | 366 | 97 | 26.14 | 165.61 | 0 | 2 |
| 2018 | Delhi Daredevils | 14 | 684 | 128* | 52.61 | 173.60 | 1 | 5 |
| 2019 | Delhi Capitals | 16 | 488 | 78* | 37.53 | 162.66 | 0 | 3 |
| 2020 | Delhi Capitals | 14 | 343 | 56 | 31.18 | 113.95 | 0 | 1 |
| 2021 | Delhi Capitals | 16 | 419 | 58* | 34.91 | 128.52 | 0 | 3 |
| 2022 | Delhi Capitals | 14 | 340 | 44 | 30.90 | 151.78 | 0 | 0 |
| 2024 | Delhi Capitals | 14 | 446 | 88* | 40.54 | 155.40 | 0 | 3 |
| 2025 | Lucknow Super Giants | 14 | 269 | — | 18.64 | — | 1 | 0 |
| 2026 | Lucknow Super Giants | 14 | 312 | 68 | 28.36 | 138.05 | 0 | 1 |
| Total | 139 | 3865 | 128* | 33.61 | 146.79 | 2 | 20 |
The numbers tell a story of brilliance, injury, comeback, and a slight dip. His 2018 season, 684 runs at a staggering average of 52.61 and a strike rate of 173.60, remains one of the all-time great individual IPL batting campaigns. His 128* against Sunrisers Hyderabad that season is still the highest score ever by a wicketkeeper-batter in IPL history. The 2024 comeback season, where he scored 446 runs at a strike rate of 155.40 for Delhi after his recovery from the accident, was nothing short of miraculous.
The two seasons in Lucknow, however, have been the least productive of his IPL career. At 28 years old, with his best cricket still ahead of him, a return to Delhi, the city that shaped him, could be exactly the reset he needs.
The Price Tag Debate: INR 27 Crore to INR 15 Crore
Perhaps the most fascinating subplot of this trade is the financial dimension. Pant, who was acquired by LSG for a record INR 27 crore, the highest ever paid for any player in IPL auction history at the time, is reportedly set to move back to Delhi Capitals for just INR 15 crore. That’s a pay cut of INR 12 crore, nearly 44% of his last contract value.
On one hand, it signals how much Pant’s stock has dipped following two underwhelming seasons. On the other, it reflects a pragmatic cricketer who understands that environment, comfort, and purpose matter more than a paycheck. The report also indicates that Pant was approached by at least two teams, DC being one, and an unnamed franchise that has won the IPL title more than once. The fact that he is reportedly leaning toward Delhi speaks volumes about the emotional pull of homecoming.
Since there exists a significant financial gap between Pant’s valuation and Kuldeep’s (INR 13.25 crore), the trade may involve an additional player or compensatory asset moving from DC to LSG to balance the equation.
Kuldeep Yadav, The Chinaman’s IPL Chapter
Kuldeep Yadav is, without doubt, one of India’s most gifted spinners of his generation. Born in Unnao but raised in Kanpur, the left-arm wrist spinner became the first chinaman bowler to represent India in Test cricket. His IPL story, however, has been one of peaks and valleys, dizzying highs followed by inexplicable dips in form.
His best IPL season came in 2022, his first year with Delhi Capitals, when he scalped 21 wickets in 14 matches, including a career-best 4/14. That season announced his IPL rebirth after years of anonymity at KKR. IPL 2025 was also solid, 15 wickets in 13 matches at an economy of 7.07.
But in IPL 2026, the numbers took a hit. Kuldeep played 12 matches, took 10 wickets, and his economy swelled to 10.29, a figure that is hard to defend for a bowler commanding INR 13.25 crore. His BBI of 3/29 in the season suggests some fight, but not enough impact to justify his hefty price tag.
Kuldeep Yadav’s IPL Bowling Record, Season by Season
| Season | Team | Matches | Wickets | Economy | BBI | |
| 2016 | KKR | 3 | 2 | 9.33 | 2/28 | |
| 2017 | KKR | 9 | 8 | 7.44 | 3/31 | |
| 2018 | KKR | 16 | 17 | 7.28 | 3/31 | |
| 2019 | KKR | 16 | 9 | 8.83 | 4/20 | |
| 2020 | KKR | 13 | 5 | 9.00 | 3/14 | |
| 2021 | KKR | 2 | 2 | 5.66 | 2/19 | |
| 2022 | DC | 14 | 21 | 7.83 | 4/14 | |
| 2023 | DC | 14 | 21 | 7.65 | 3/15 | |
| 2024 | DC | 13 | 19 | 8.33 | 4/22 | |
| 2025 | DC | 14 | 15 | 7.07 | 3/22 | |
| 2026 | DC | 12 | 10 | 10.29 | 3/29 |
For LSG, Kuldeep would add a dimension they have sorely missed, a genuine wrist-spin option with the ability to take wickets in the powerplay and middle overs. If the move helps Kuldeep rediscover his rhythm and economy, it could be a masterstroke by the Lucknow management.
Delhi’s Rebuilding Act, Enter Yuvraj Singh?
Off the field, DC appears to be restructuring aggressively ahead of IPL 2027. Beyond the Pant trade, a report in the Times of India has suggested that Delhi are set to appoint none other than Yuvraj Singh as a support staff member. A senior Delhi official has reportedly confirmed the move, though no official statement has been released yet.
Yuvraj’s inclusion as a mentor or batting coach would be a masterstroke, bringing in a World Cup-winning pedigree and a man who intimately understands high-pressure cricket. For a young Delhi squad currently led by Axar Patel, having a legend like Yuvraj in the dressing room could be invaluable.
Speaking of captaincy, with Axar Patel already at the helm of DC, the question of whether Pant returns as skipper remains unanswered. Pant stepping back from captaincy at LSG may actually prove to be a blessing, allowing him to bat freely without the pressure of leadership, potentially returning to the explosive form that made him the most expensive player in IPL history just two seasons ago.
Two Careers, One Trade Window
What makes this potential trade especially compelling is that both Pant and Kuldeep are at similar inflection points. Both are proven match-winners at the international level, Kuldeep was part of both the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cup-winning squads for India, and both have arguably underperformed in IPL 2026 relative to their talent and price tags.
A change of franchise, a change of environment, and a chance to prove the doubters wrong, that is the tantalizing prospect this trade offers. For Delhi Capitals, it is the return of a prodigal son. For Lucknow Super Giants, it is a calculated investment in a bowler who, on his day, can win matches singlehandedly.
IPL 2027 hasn’t even started, and already, it has its first blockbuster storyline.
