Liverpool continue their charge towards the Premier League title when they host Sheffield United in their first game of 2020.

Liverpool FC

Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League has shown no signs of abating during the festive fixture pileup, and a hard fought 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday saw their lead restored to 13 points as we head into the new year.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have now won 10 Premier League matches on the bounce, and that draw at Old Trafford remains the only time they have dropped points this season. They look nailed on for the title, and their sensational record at Anfield has played a big part in their recent success.

The hosts are now unbeaten in 50 Premier League home games, 40 of which have ended in a Liverpool win. Their last failure to win a top flight match at Anfield came at the end of January 2019, so the travelling Sheffield United support won’t be holding out much hope on Thursday.

Sheffield United FC

The Blades’ long standing unbeaten record away from home came to an end on Sunday as they lost 2-0 at Manchester City, but once again it was far from a disastrous display from the newly promoted underdogs.

Even after this defeat they remain in a very respectable 8th place in the top flight, and they’ll definitely make life hard for Liverpool on Thursday. However, the fact that they mustered no shots on target at the Etihad is a sign of how things are likely to go at Anfield, so we’re not expecting much from them going forward.

LIV VS SHF: Head-to-head

Liverpool won the reverse fixture 0-1, for which they were on the road.

Sheffield have not scored a goal in the last two clashes, and in return, conceded five goals.

In the last two decades, not once have Sheffield kept a clean sheet.

At this venue, the hosts hold a 100% winning record in the past twenty years, and not once have conceded a goal.

LIV VS SHF: Predicted starting lineup (XI)

Liverpool: Alisson; Milner, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Keita, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Sheffield United: Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Norwood, Lundstram, Fleck, Stevens; Mousset, McBurnie.

LIV VS SHF: Best players

Liverpool: Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane had a wonderful 2019 and has arguably been Liverpool’s best player in the Premier League this season as they look to end their long title wait.

The Senegalese forward became the first Liverpool player to reach 10 Premier League goals for the season in their 1-0 win over Wolves at the weekend, moving one ahead of Mohamed Salah.

But Mane hasn’t just been scoring goals, he has also chipped in with six assists so far and is only behind Trent Alexander-Arnold among the Liverpool squad.

Key stat: Sadio Mane (16) has been directly involved in more Premier League goals than any other Liverpool player this season.

Sheffield United: Oliver Norwood

If Sheffield United are to get anything against the runaway Premier League leaders, captain Oliver Norwood will need to be at his best.

The 28-year-old has been superb for Sheffield United this season in both defensive and attacking aspects of the game. He is a constant threat creatively and is also not afraid to get stuck into a tackle, with only Chris Basham (47) making more than Norwood in the Premier League for the Blades.

With Liverpool set to attack, Norwood’s position at the heart of Sheffield United’s midfield will be key to try and stop the likes of Mane, Roberto Firmino and Salah.

Key stat: Oliver Norwood has created more chances (29) than any other Sheffield United player in the Premier League this season.
