Indian contingent finalized for Paris Olympics, IOA releases list of 117 athletes

Paris Olympics

India’s team for the upcoming Paris Olympics is all set. The Ministry of Sports has finalized a 117-athlete strong contingent, along with 140 support staff and officials, to represent the country at the prestigious event.

The biggest contingent comes from Athletics, with 29 athletes (11 women and 18 men) ready to compete. Shooting follows closely with 21 athletes, and Hockey boasts a strong presence with 19 players. Other sports sending representatives include Table Tennis (8) and badminton (7) featuring PV Sindhu, Wrestling (6), Archery (6), Boxing (6), and several others with smaller delegations.

One noticeable absence is shot putter Abha Khatua. Despite qualifying through world rankings, her name was mysteriously missing from the World Athletics’ list of Olympic participants. The Sports Ministry hasn’t provided any explanation for her exclusion.

The 140 support staff and officials play a crucial role in ensuring the athletes perform at their best. However, there’s a limit on how many can stay in the official Olympic Village. Following guidelines set by the Paris Olympic organizers, only 67 support staff can stay there, including 11 top officials and 5 medical team members.

To meet the additional needs of the athletes, the government has approved funding for 72 other coaches and support staff to stay in hotels or other locations outside the Village. This ensures all athletes have the necessary support throughout the games.

The Paris Olympics 2024 offer India a chance to surpass its historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Back then, the 119-member contingent returned with the country’s best-ever medal haul – a phenomenal 7 medals, including the unforgettable gold medal won by Neeraj Chopra in the javelin throw.

With a strong team across various disciplines, India has a real shot at achieving even greater success in the Paris Olympics. The country will be looking to its established stars like PV Sindhu and Neeraj Chopra, while also hoping for breakout performances from younger athletes.

The finalized contingent signifies the culmination of years of hard work and dedication by the athletes, coaches, and support staff. The nation will be cheering them on as they strive for glory in the Paris Olympics. Whether India can rewrite history and surpass its previous record remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure – the athletes are ready to give their all on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
