India planned poorly before the 2019 World Cup: Yuvraj Singh

yuvraj-singhTeam India has made it a habit of faltering close to the finish line in global ICC events in the recent past. It is going to be a decade since the Men in Blue clinched their last major ICC trophy, with the team lifting the 2011 World Cup on home soil. India has been defeated twice in the World Cup semi-finals and has been defeated in the final and semi-final of the two T20 World Cups respectively. They had also suffered a loss to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy held at England.

In the recently held 2019 World Cup, the Men in Blue lost once again to New Zealand in the semi-finals. Yuvraj Singh is the man who knows what it takes to win the World Cup, as he was part of the 2007 and 2011 winning teams. The 38-year old retired cricketer believes India can only win if they convert their bilateral dominance into World Cup successes in the near future.

The ex-cricketer, who recently made an appearance in the Expo 2020 Dubai cricket final, told Sport360, “Of course they should (win a major title). With the amount of talent that they have in the form of the players and squad, they really should.”

Singh felt that India’s weakness in the middle overs has been exposed by New Zealand in the ongoing series. He says that the team had ‘poor planning’ and underwhelming strategies on how to clinch the 2019 World Cup.

Singh simply said, “I just felt that the 2019 World Cup planning was really poor. I think that the team management and selectors made some really bad calls – before the World Cup and in the World Cup – and that is what cost them. So we definitely need better minds behind the scene, and better selectors.”

Yuvraj has his hopes pinned on his former skipper Sourav Ganguly, who was appointed as BCCI’s President last year. This decision, he mused, will result in positive changes for India, at least behind the scenes.

“I think Sourav Ganguly coming in as BCCI president will give a lot of brain to it in making such things better. We have the talent no doubt, we just need a good think tank, and hopefully, we will be ready for the coming T20I World Cup in Australia.”
